Are there spiders?
Yes, you will
be staying in a camp in the centre of a reserve in Africa. Most
of the spiders and other creepy crawlies keep out of the way and
are more scared of you! Like most animals if you do not
antagonize them they will leave you alone!
The accommodation is kept clean and if you do the
same during your time here there will be fewer places for creepy
crawlies to make a nice warm bed. If you are concerned, bring a
mosquito net to drape over your bed at night.
What is the food like?
The
food is a mix of traditional African dishes and other favourite
dishes from home. We use as much locally produced food as
possible and most of the meat comes from the reserve. Dinners
are prepared and cooked by volunteers and staff and when
possible cooked over open fires. Please note there is no chef at
the volunteer camp.
Can you cater for vegetarians?
Yes. Vegetarian food is readily available in South Africa.
Can you cater for vegans or any other
specific dietary requirements?
Unfortunately it is hard to find a good selection of food for
vegans and those with gluten and wheat intolerances etc. We
normally ask if you can provide recipes and where necessary
bring hard to find items out with you.
Is it really cold in the African winter?
Yes. Night time temperatures can drop to below 0 and have got as
low as -6°C. During the day you can expect temperatures to reach
the early 20’s.
Do we get a chance to do all advertised
activities during our stay?
No.
Some activities are seasonal such as the Game Capture which only
operates on the reserve during one month in winter. We try in
include as many of the activities into a four week programme but
being a working wildlife reserve sometimes activities may be
dropped in place of other more urgent work.
Do we get to handle live animals?
No. All the animals on the reserve are wild and therefore
potentially dangerous. The only time volunteers get to handle
animals is during the game capture which is highly supervised.
Do we get to choose where we go on our day
trips?
We have a selection
of destinations for our day trips including Pilanesberg National
Park, Predator Park, Sun City and Kshwane Mountain Reserve and
these are visited on a monthly basis for each programme. If you
wanted to go on additional excursions they would have to be
organized and paid for by you.
What is the accommodation like?
You will be staying
in a rustic camp in the heart of the reserve. The camp is not
fenced and is made up of 6 wooden cabins with verandahs and a
main cabin where there is a kitchen, lounge and large
verandah. There is a firepit, earth oven and braii area and
along from the camp some natural rock pools to cool off
in. Cabins are either shared or individual depending on numbers.
